Produced shortly before the war in Iraq began, the text of “New York Times (February 16-22, 2003)” was sampled from expressions found that week in the newspaper. Examining the affects of the daily news, it accumulates bits of language to capture the anxious mood of the moment. Conceived for installation at a window, the piece is intended to function as a soundtrack to familiar scenes—images in our heads or what is passing by on the street. A photograph accompanying the audio shows the view from the window in Lower Manhattan where the work was first installed in May 2003.
